TIBCO Spotfire User Forum 2009 Keynote Presentation

"Risk and Consequences: What can energy trading teach us about operational excellence?"
Sam Bennikutty, Senior Manager, Ernst & Young LLP

Mr. Bennikutty will share lessons from the expanding financial meltdown proving that every industry is risky and every part of the enterprise is subject to the effects of risk. What would be the benefit to operational performance if managing, mitigating and collaborating on risk could be made the shared responsibility of every business professional? Is this even possible?

In this presentation, Ernst & Young will describe some of the fundamental requirements for running a risk-aware business and give examples from the energy trading industry of the key role a robust analytics platform can play in equipping a broader group of professionals to make risk-aware decisions in daily operations.

Chevron

Optimizing Gas Injection to Improve Oil Recovery

Gas injection surveillance involves monitoring field injection and production volumes and pressure trends over time for optimal oil recovery. These large amounts of data are easily analyzed in Spotfire where trends and patterns are identified and graphically mapped. The use of Spotfire DXP in a Chevron-operated oil field identified low-pressure, under-injected areas and graphically displayed needed operational changes to management. The resulting injection modifications flattened the field decline rate for a marked improved recovery in oil and natural gas.

In 2008, DrillingInfo’s Energy Strategy Partners released the first of their basin research platforms. Beyond the obvious capabilities of using Spotfire to assist in the development of the basic analytical report, DI ESP used Spotfire’s web player to create a dynamic platform, where subscribing members can individually validate and analyze the constantly updated data streams based on the report. These visualizations are often complexly formatted for proper analytical evaluation of Best Practices in a multitude of disciplines and Best Raw Acreage from an oil and gas producing point of view. This combination creates a new approach for delivering non-static and evolving analytics and supporting information to customers to support their decision processes. The demo will include how we used Spotfire, combined with DrillingInfo’s unique dataset and in-house domain knowledge to develop our business intelligence tool for the Barnett Shale and in turn, how users enhance the value of the tool through their own interactions with Spotfire.

Hess Corporation

“Extending WellView - Using Data to Drive Performance”
Kimm Cashiola, Senior Drilling Tech, Hess Corporation

In 2008 Hess began using Spotfire to connect to our Data Warehouse piece of WellView. This warehouse includes all of our WellView data in its calculated form. Spotfire allows us to easily utilize the graphic functionality to quickly analyze trends across various types of data. Previously we used many different reports using Pivot Tables within Excel which intimidated many users that were unfamiliar with this functionality. Spotfire has simplified our reporting functions and allows for ease of use for all disciplines that need access to our data. In addition, we are able to add in our own calculations using our existing data from WellView.

"HighMount Production Analysis Tool"

Optimizing production on over 6500 wells in the Sonora Gas Field is quite a task and was the motivation behind utilizing Spotfire to develop HighMount's Production Analysis Tool.  This tool helps identify and localize production issues as well as tracks the impact of completed and ongoing projects.  Currently the tool is aiding to recover lost production due to downtime and well loading.  It also updates the impact of new drills versus base gas, recompletions, pumping unit installs, and other special projects.  Although the Production Analysis Tool is still in its infancy, it has the potential to increase well optimization in Sonora while decreasing the time associated with managing the field.

Rimrock Energy, LLC

"Using Spotfire to work smarter, not harder, in challenging Times."
Connie R. Mitchell, CTO/Corp Secretary, Rimrock Energy, LLC

The world economy has presented us with tough challenges, we are constantly being asked to do more with less.  The pressure to shrink our staff causes us all to take on more work.  We have to find more efficient ways to accomplish this more work without working more.  Spotfire is an excellent answer to solving this problem.  Simple tasks of evaluating data from massive stores of records can take man-hours we don’t have now.  Spotfire can simplify the task down to a fraction of the time.  Rimrock is using Spotfire linked to Excalibur Land/Lease records and Accounting records for just this purpose.  The learning curve for the user is minimal so it is embraced immediately.

OAO Severstal is among the top 15 steel manufacturers in the world, supplying the Automotive, Oil & Gas, Construction industry and others. Due to the commodity nature of our products, our business is especially impacted by the prevailing economic conditions. In the current down turn, we are being asked improve the efficiency of operations everywhere in our business, and to do so with fewer resources. We believe a common analytic platform is key to accomplishing this goal; because, not only can analytic applications improve operational decision making, a shared analytic platform can reduce our reliance on specialty applications. In this presentation, we will describe how we use analytics, and the value it brings to manufacturing production, product sales effectiveness, financial analytics and other cases.
